Students who have been identified as gifted will have the opportunity to compact out of a Communication Arts or Social Studies class in order to participate in extended curriculum classes. The following procedures will facilitate the process. First and second quarters will be Communication Arts. Third and fourth quarters will be Social studies.


¨ At the beginning of each quarter the ECS teacher will give teachers and administrators a list of identified students and a description of the extension class(es) offered.


¨ At the beginning of each quarter the ECS teacher will send a letter to students and parents informing them of the ECS extension classes being offered each quarter.


¨ After schedules have been arranged, ECS students will report to the ECS teacher and during the first two weeks of ECS Class, they will complete a standards based WebQuest* designed to guide students through the essential facts, vocabulary, concepts and understandings to satisfy the requirements of the class they will be missing for that quarter.


¨School district post tests will be given to students upon the completion of the WebQuest.


¨ During the remainder of the quarter, eligible students will participate in an extended curriculum class with the ECS teacher during either their communication arts or social studies classes. The class topic should be based on areas of gifted identification and interest.


¨ Mid-quarter reports will include WebQuest results and ECS unit assignments and assessments. Reports will be sent to teachers, parents, and school administrators.


¨ End of the quarter reports based on ECS class requirements will be sent to teachers, administrators and parents.


¨ Habits of Mind lessons will be taught and reinforced throughout ECS units to fulfill some of the gifted education social/emotional requirements.


¨ Classroom teachers and the ECS teacher will make note of other social/emotional issues common to some high ability students and team with the counselor to address student’s needs. Such issues may include perfectionism, under-achievement, peer relationships, oversensitivity, and organization.


¨ Quarterly newsletters illustrating ECS activities and opportunities will be sent to teachers, parents and administrators.
